Hamilton placed third in the US Figure Skating Championships in 1980. As a result, he was selected for the American Olympic Team. He was being mentored at the time by Don Laws.
At the Winter Olympics in 1980, he finished fifth. When he went to the US Championships in 1981, he became famous. The audience gave him standing ovations.
In 1981, Hamilton took first place in the World Figure Skating Championship. He achieved 5.8 and 5.9 overall ratings and 5.8 and 5.9 for technical merit during his lengthy program. One of his hardest jumps, the triple Lutz, served as the opening act for the lengthy program.
