Sarah Taylor [sjtaylor30], one of women’s cricket’s all-time greats, recently announced her pregnancy on social media on 22nd February 2023 (Wednesday). She uploaded the child’s photo sonogram and photos of herself and her girlfriend, Diana Main.
Being a mother has always been my partner’s dream,” Taylor said to her almost one million followers across her many social media sites.
“It hasn’t been an easy road, but Diana has kept going. I am very excited to be a part of her journey to being a wonderful mother.
“The journey hasn’t been an easy one but Diana has never given up. I know she will be the best mum and I’m so happy to be a part of it”
Taylor has made several firsts in the game, including becoming the first woman to play in Australia’s top-tier men’s cricket league and the first woman to coach a senior England men’s side (in 2021), so it’s no surprise that she’s already a legend in the sport.

She received a flood of congratulations from the whole cricket community on establishing a family, but she was also bombarded by many wilfully confused commentators in the days that followed, asking how it was possible that two women could have a kid together.
Taylor responded with a string of tweets in which she discussed her own sexuality, IVF (In vitro fertilization), and the mainstream of queer families.

She tweeted “Yes I am a lesbian, and have been for a very long time. No it’s not a choice. I am in love and happy, that’s what matters. Every family is different…how it operates and how it looks. Educate yourself before passing judgment. The baby will be loved and supported…”
“We are all brought up differently with differing beliefs, I do not pass judgment on other’s. I will however pass judgment on hate, mocking and abuse. You do not belong here. Love who you want as long as you’re happy. Thanks to all who sent love and support. Love is love”
Like other English cricketers Katherine Brunt and Nat Sciver, who married last year and whose relationship was spotlighted in a BBC piece for LGBT History Month over the weekend, Taylor’s revelation will help increase the awareness of LGBTQ athletes in women’s cricket.
Brunt, who is openly bisexual and lives with her partner, has spoken about the difficulties they face on a daily basis as a result of their sexual orientation. These challenges are similar to those that Taylor encountered when she came out as a high-profile figure in a sport with millions of fans around the world last week.
When I’m out and about with Nat in a typical setting, I think about whether or not I should take her hand before I do, and then I determine midway through our stroll whether or not it’s appropriate. And I have to go through that process every time it occurs, which is awful and I don’t want to have to,” Brunt said in an interview with BBC’s Jack Murley in 2022.
But the more I do it, the easier it becomes, and the less time it takes between when you think, “Should I do that?” and when you really do it.
With public figures like Taylor in positions of power in the sports world being so open about their relationship, it’s possible that the LGBTQ community as a whole may find it easier to negotiate the challenges they face on a daily basis.
