Empowering the Workforce: Strategies for Worker Development

If you’re operating within the manufacturing or construction industry, you might be uncertain of your options when it comes to motivating and developing your workforce. This guide is for those business leaders who are struggling to help their staff achieve their true ability, and for whom this is affecting productivity in the workplace. Then, here are some of the best strategies for worker progression that you can pick from.

Book External Training Programs for Them

There’s only so much that you will be able to teach your employees yourself. To make sure that they can continue to grow their skills and knowledge, you should search for external training programs. These will allow your employees to hone the experience they already have and learn from experts in the manufacturing and construction fields. You might even be able to find niche training programs in subjects that your workers are individually interested in, such as new technology.

However, when you’re looking for these programs, you should make sure that they come well reviewed and that the teachers running them are qualified and exactly who they say they are.

Set Up a Mentoring Scheme

However, a lot of what your employees need to know can be learned from others within your business. Instead of leaving your workers to struggle and learn on their own, or taking time out of your own day to help them, you should consider setting up a mentoring scheme.

A mentoring scheme will allow each new employee to have a buddy who can instruct them on everything they need to know. This will ensure that you can refine your onboarding employees’ knowledge and ensure that it’s specific to the tasks that they’ll be required to carry out within your company.

Find Good Contractor Accommodation

It isn’t just your employees that you have to look after, though. If you hire contractors to complete short-term tasks, you also need to make sure that they feel empowered and are well looked after.

You might find that your contractors are unable to carry out the jobs that they’re given, or that they must reject excellent opportunities because they have nowhere to stay while the jobs are completed. Instead of leaving your contractors to sort out lodging for themselves, you should consider looking around for great accommodation that can allow them to stay near their place of work and will ensure that they can get a good night’s sleep before a long day of work. Luckily, many websites allow you to search for and book accommodation for contractors that you hire.

Encourage Job Shadowing

It’s important that you empower your employees to make their own decisions and follow their own career paths. One of the options that you have to do this is to encourage job shadowing.

Job shadowing can mean that your staff get a glimpse into the many other roles that make up your business. They might even be able to learn simply by watching others and can then decide if this new position could be right for them. This is an especially good strategy for those who are aiming to take on leadership positions in the near future and could work as part of an effective handover.
